Best Things To Do In Florence Italy

Oh Florence, I love you….let me count thy ways! Yes, it’s true — Florence is Italy’s Renaissance jewel – home to Michelangelo’s David, Ponte Vecchio and the Duomo and Pitti Palace, and the Boboli Gardens. But, it is so much more than that. In my opinion, it’s the perfect hub to stop and stay awhile. As I sit on the streets sipping another glass of Aperol Spritz, I can see myself living there. I feel part of the culture. I take it all in. I love the sights, the people, the shops, the open-air markets and of course that it’s an easy drive to Tuscany.

City Tour

We began our visit with a city tour of Florence so that everyone could see the must sees and get a taste of the city and what they would like to revisit. Our guide had the most enthusiasm and love for her city and it radiated through her. We visited Piazza della Signoria, Loggia dei Lanzi, Palazzo Vecchio and the Uffizi Gallery before heading to Piazza della Repubblica and Piazza del Duomo. Of course, would it even be a trip to Florence if we didn’t see Michelangelo’s David at the Accademia Gallery? I think not! One of our favorite surprise stops was at Il Papiro where we witnessed the art of the beautiful paper making firsthand by the owner.

Pasta Making Class

Next stop, the Pasta making class and this was a fan favorite. First things first, we got the lowdown on the pasta essentials: flour, eggs, and a sprinkle of good vibes. The chef had us kneading, mixing, and sharing stories about why pasta is practically a religion in Italy. This class wasn’t just about pasta, though. We were shown how to make a true, Italian meal from beginning to end dessert and all. It was quite the treat. Once everything was prepared, we were able to relax in the olive garden out back and get to know the other guests. This was just as much fun as everything. Then it was time to feast. Beyond the delicious meal, the pasta cooking class in Florence left us with newfound skills, cherished memories, and a deeper connection to the heart of Italian cuisine. Good times, great food, and a whole lot of messy fun. We immediately went back and ordered pasta makers and all the goods to make sure we never forgot how to do this.

School of Leather

Another special stopping point that everyone loved was The School of Leather. True family artisans who teach leather making skills in an old monastary. Nestled in the heart of Florence is a hidden gem that's not just a school but a gateway to the ancient art of leather craftsmanship. Steeped in tradition and housed in a centuries-old monastery, this institution is where the magic of crafting leather comes to life. As you step through its doors, you're greeted by smell of the leather and can watch the artisans make their creations in real time. From belts and wallets to purses that tell a story of time-honored techniques, each piece is a masterpiece. What makes this school truly special is the lineage of family artisans who pass down their leather-making skills with passion and pride. Visitors not only get a glimpse into the process but it’s the perfect opportunity to take home a handmade leather souvenir that embodies the city.

Shopping and Gelato

We filled our days with shopping, gelato, wine and laughter, exploring the birthplace of the Renaissance. . As we casually strolled by the Arno River, the Museo di San Miniato al Monte and the Leonardo da Vinci museum totally grabbed our attention with their cool Florentine art. The Corridoio Vasariano gave us a different angle to soak it all in, and obviously, we had to swing by the Santa Croce and San Lorenzo districts – each with its own vibe. And let's not forget the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore and the Santa Maria Novella – seriously mind-blowing stuff that wrapped up our adventure through Florence's cultural scene. It was hard to break away to go to the next stops but knowing the beautiful rolling hills of Tuscany were in our future kept us from being too heartbroken
